Land acknowledgement
SouthCoast Climate reality acknowledges Indigenous Peoples as the traditional stewards of the land, and the enduring relationship that exists between them and their traditional territories. The land on which we sit is the traditional unceded territory of the Pocasset Wampanoag Tribe of the Pokanoket Nation. We acknowledge the painful history of genocide and forced occupation of their territory, and we honor and respect the many diverse indigenous people connected from time immemorial to this land on which we gather.
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice Statement
Climate Reality Massachusetts Southcoast envisions an environmentally and economically sustainable community with clean water, clean energy, abundant life, conserved lands and access to the water, a vibrant cultural heritage, and a diversity of engaged citizens. Just as natural ecosystems depend on biodiversity to thrive, the long-term success of the Massachusetts Southcoast area restoration effort depends on the equitable, just, and inclusive engagement of all its citizens living throughout the community coming together to make a collective impact. That is the heart of who we are. In order to more fully accomplish our mission and live our values, we strive to make our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice evident in all aspects of our work, our team, and organizational structure. The impacts of discrimination and continuing environmental, economic, and health disparities disproportionately burden underserved communities, including those of color, low-income status, and indigenous populations.
Continued partnership with organizations like Greater New Bedford Youth Alliance, Coalition for Social Justice, and others is key to our work. Outreach to local schools to increase youth participation in virtual trainings to be held in April and May will help build the next generation of leaders to take on the climate crisis. We also commit to doing a land acknowledgement at all our meetings and using closed captions in virtual meetings to be more accessible.
We table at events across the Southcoast community to get the word out about ways to be climate conscious. This gives us an opportunity to listen to marginalized groups, as well and also to recruit new members for our group as we strive to be more inclusive and increase diversity.
