Clean Energy Home and Transportation
WHY ELECTRIFY? It all starts with the OCEAN!
You can’t be a resident of one of the string of towns along the Massachusetts Southcoast and be far from the Atlantic Ocean. It flows into our saltwater bays and sounds which in turn feed our rivers, lakes, streams and ponds. People who live, work and visit here and
the sea life that inhabit our waters all depend on the health of the Ocean and its interconnectedness with our region. We should take steps to safeguard and preserve it for the benefit of everyone.
When we burn fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas, we add more and more CO2 into the atmosphere. This builds up acts like a blanket that traps heat around the world and disrupts the climate. The thicker the blanket gets, the more heat it traps causing rising temperatures on land and sea.
Being so close to the water, we have firsthand experience of the effects of a warming Ocean. Warming water expands resulting in sea level rise and polar ice sheet melting. More volume of water has caused serious beach erosion and degradation of the salt marshes protecting habitats and coastlines. Shorebirds have lost breeding grounds and transportation infrastructure has been damaged by coastal flooding. By reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, we can actively eliminate the risks they cause saving people and places from harm.
Here in Massachusetts, civic leaders recognize the importance of moving away from fossil fuels and have incentivized private investment in renewable energy technologies. The 2023 New Bedford based Vineyard Wind project targeted for completion by mid-2024 will ultimately supply 400,000 Massachusetts homes with electricity generated from 100% wind energy. Additional wind projects planned for contiguous Massachusetts Ocean waters, an area referred to as the “Saudi Arabia of Wind,” are projected to supply wind energy to all New England States in the future.
As citizens, we all can play a vital role in cooling the planet, and make money, too! Massachusetts and the Federal Government offer monetary incentives, available to everyone now and over the next 10 years, which help us plan for and implement modern home systems sourced by renewable energy like wind and solar.
The important step you can take now is use these financial resources to weatherize your home, electrify your heating/cooling systems, upgrade old appliances and invest in an electric vehicle. This lessens our reliance on fossil fuels AND saves everyone money on fuel and gas bills. Check out Rewiring America’s IRA calculator to see what you save. BENEFITS of ELECTRIFYING YOUR HOME
Electrifying your home systems and appliances can offer several benefits.
Here are some reasons why you might consider making the switch:
1. Energy Efficiency: Electric systems and appliances are often more energy-efficient than their non-electric counterparts. For example:
2. Environmental Impact: Electrification reduces reliance on fossil fuels, leading to lower greenhouse gas emissions. By choosing electric options, you contribute to a cleaner environment.
3. Health and Safety: Electric systems are generally safer and healthier than gas systems. There’s no risk of gas leaks or combustion-related accidents and electric powered stoves and appliances keep the home environment emission free.
4. Smart Home Integration: Electrified systems can easily integrate with smart home technology. You can control them remotely, set schedules, and receive alerts.
5. Reduced Maintenance: Electric appliances often require less maintenance compared to their gas counterparts.
6. Renewable Energy Compatibility: As the world transitions to renewable energy sources, electrification aligns well with solar panels, wind turbines, and other clean energy solutions. Remember that the decision to electrify your home depends on your specific needs, budget, and local regulations. It’s essential to weigh the pros and cons before making any changes.
